Cleve-Hill reports higher assessed values but only minor tax changes

The total assessed value of residential properties has increased in the Cleveland-Hill school district for 2022-23, but property tax rates remain about the same as last year, according to the district’s business administrator.

At the July 20 school board meeting, Business Administrator Carolyn Robertson reported that the Town of Cheektowaga’s assessments result in a tax rate of $17 per $1,000 assessed value, but individual homeowners will not see a significant change up or down in their tax bill. According to 2020-21 property tax rates, home owners paid $19 per $1,000 assessed value.

“ The rate did go down significantly, which is what we were hoping to see,” Robertson said. “As assessments go up, tax bills should stay pretty similar,” she added.

In other matters, Cleveland Hill Schools welcomed a new teacher at elementary level, Julie Gehring, and a new assistant principal, Scott Bielec, at the Middle School.

Superintendent Jon MacSwan asked the board to consider making modifications to the district attendance policy. A full presentation will be made at some point during the school year. “We are realizing that we are lacking in some spots,” MacSwan said.

Middle School Principal Danielle Alterio reported minor changes to the daily schedule at the middle school – switching the start time from 7:35 a.m. to 7:50 a.m., which is also the same as the high school. In the previous school year, a 7:35 a.m. start time only allocated 10 minutes for students to get breakfast and make it to their homeroom class. Students will have have a specific homeroom to report to every day. “ They are going to see the same teacher every day to help build relationships, with their peers and have teacher advocates. It’s a minor change to the daily schedule, but it will be a great benefit to the middle school program,” Alterio said.

The next meeting of the Cleveland Hill Board of Education will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, in the Community Room at 105 Mapleview Road.
